Pairing Caribbean Cuisine with Wine: Expert Tips

Pairing Caribbean Cuisine with Wine: Expert Tips

NOVEMBER 11,

2024

If there is one thing that makes Caribbean cuisine stand out, it is its combination of spicy, varied and fresh flavors. Often, these are accompanied with wine, which becomes a perfect option to highlight this diversity.

Despite the above, the truth is that pairing wines with Caribbean dishes can be a challenge, since we are talking about tropical flavors that require wines that are up to the task. Therefore, below we will provide some recommendations to keep in mind to choose the perfect wine according to each dish.

Types of wines and Caribbean dishes

Before going on to the recommendations, we would like to talk about the different types of wines and how they are linked to the typical dishes of Caribbean cuisine. First of all, we should talk about white wines. These tend to be fresh and light and are a true classic with seafood dishes. With citrus notes, varieties such as Blanc, Sauvignon and Albariño go very well with seafood, fish and ceviches, because their acidity balances salinity.

Secondly, we refer to red wines. It is often thought that they do not go well with seafood dishes, but this is nothing more than a myth, because some varieties are able to enhance the flavors in a surprising way. An example is the young Pinot Noir, with notes of red fruits and light body, which can go very well with herb marinades or fish with intense sauces.

Finally, we must mention rosé wines. These are also fresh and light, while possessing a structure that is considered perfect for Caribbean dishes with a pork or chicken base. With sweet notes, they can harmonize dishes, providing a very balanced experience.

Pairing tips

Now, we would like to talk about some interesting tips to keep in mind when pairing wine and Caribbean food. The first key is to know the dish well, identifying both the main ingredients and the spices. For example, while dishes with spicy spices may need a wine that provides a bit of sweetness, dishes with tropical fruits go well with aromatic wines.

Another key to consider is to experiment with color. That is, eliminate the idea that color is what should govern the choice and concentrate, in reality, on the intensity of the wine. For example, while a spicy chicken may balance well with a fresh rosé, a heavier fish such as tuna may go well with a light red.

To conclude, it is very important that the pairing is related to one's own taste and not to myths or rules. The best combination is always the one that suits your personal taste.

White wine and seafood dishes: a myth to banish

Undoubtedly, the idea that the only correct way to accompany seafood dishes is with white wine is deeply rooted. But the truth is that this is a myth and each wine has its own personality and can be combined in different ways.

Although it makes sense to argue that a light white wine can work very well with fish or ceviche, there is really nothing to prevent you from enjoying a light red wine with this type of dish.

At Morgan's Mango we are specialists in the different types of pairings, so we can offer complete advice so you can enjoy the best gastronomic experience.
