When we talk about cocktails we are referring to a mixture of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks that require creativity and are usually accompanied by fresh fruits and herbs.
There are several theories about the origin of the term cocktail. However, one of the most widely accepted has to do with the fact that it comes from the French coquetier, which means "egg cup". According to this view, a famous pharmacist named Antoine Peychaud, in the city of New Orleans, tended to serve drinks in small containers and adopted the term cocktail.
Following the above mentioned, the Caribbean region is a perfect area to enjoy cocktails mainly due to its climatic conditions that make it a region with abundant production of fresh tropical fruits, which are perfect ingredients for this type of drinks. In addition, the Caribbean is known worldwide for its production of rum, which is a distillate that forms the basis of many of today's most famous cocktails. But it is also worth mentioning that the tropical and fresh flavors of the cocktails are perfect to combine with the relaxed and festive atmosphere of the region, making these drinks very popular options to complete the tourist experience.
Cocktails are so famous worldwide that we can even see them in a famous movie with one of Hollywood's biggest stars: Tom Cruise in "Cocktail". The movie is from 1988 and is set in Jamaica, a Caribbean island, having been able to capture the spirit of the entire region and, especially, the cocktail culture. In it, Cruise plays Brian Flanagan, a young aspiring bartender who dreams of owning his own bar. Throughout the film we see various iconic cocktails and the crescence in both the preparation of the drinks and their presentation is on display.
The film also presents cocktails as true art forms and as a way to connect with people, which is truly representative of the environment and culture throughout the Caribbean. Caribbean bars and resorts often have bartenders who are not only capable of preparing delicious and original drinks, but also provide a show that combines culture, history, entertainment and relaxation.
This is because the cocktail culture in the Caribbean is undoubtedly not limited to the drink itself, but also to the whole social experience that goes with it.
